As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Jane Smith’s journey is a testament to the impact of diverse perspectives in leadership roles. She has navigated manufacturing complexities and positioned Jointine as a leader in its field. Her story is one of unexpected turns, resilience, and the ability to leverage her unique background to drive success in an industry she never imagined being part of.

When she began her career, she never envisioned herself at the helm of a manufacturing company. Born and raised in Lincoln, she spent two decades working for the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), where she honed her leadership skills in various senior roles. But life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths. Today, she is the Managing Director of Jointine Products (Lincoln) Ltd., the UK's sole manufacturer of gasket paper materials, exporting 95% of its production to over fifty countries.

From Civil Service to Manufacturing Powerhouse

Jane’s entry into the manufacturing world was unconventional. After a long career in the civil service, Jane faced a crossroads: relocate to London for further advancement or embrace a new challenge. She chose the latter, stepping into a role she never anticipated but quickly grew to excel in. She saw an opportunity when her stepfather, who had worked at Jointine for many years, decided to retire in 2005. By 2007, she had taken over as Managing Director, bringing a fresh perspective shaped by her background in public service.

A Different Perspective in Manufacturing

Transitioning from the civil service to manufacturing wasn’t without its challenges. Jane initially questioned how her skills would translate to this new industry. However, she soon realised that her experience in business management, audit procedures, and financial oversight was not only transferable but incredibly valuable. Her unique approach—rooted in meticulous planning, regulatory compliance, and a passion for continuous learning—has maintained Jointine’s reputation for quality and reliability.

Under Jane’s leadership, Jointine Products has thrived, particularly in the automotive sector, where their gasket materials are highly regarded for their performance in low-heat applications. Jane’s dedication to maintaining high standards has ensured that Jointine’s products, marketed under well-known brands like Flexoid® and Sizoid®, continue to set the benchmark for excellence in the industry.

Innovation with a Green Focus

One of Jane’s most significant achievements has been leading Jointine through considerable change, particularly in response to environmental concerns. She has overseen the implementation of sustainable practices, including replanting trees used in paper production and sourcing renewable materials to prevent deforestation. These efforts have enhanced the company’s environmental credentials and ensured the longevity of its products, which boast a five-year shelf life under proper storage conditions.

She has also tackled the challenges of a retiring workforce by championing continuous training and recruitment initiatives. Her forward-thinking approach has ensured that valuable skills and knowledge are passed on to the next generation, securing Jointine’s future.

Leadership in Action

Her leadership style is characterised by her relentless pursuit of excellence and her belief in the power of learning. She advises aspiring leaders never to stop learning, a principle that has guided her own career. This commitment to personal and professional development earned her an MSc in Study Of Security Management, with honours, in 2015. She later went on to complete a Foundation Degree in Professional Practice of International Trade whi, which was more pertinent to the business's needs.

Her expertise has also been recognised on broader platforms. In June 2020, Jane was featured on the Leaders Council podcast, where she shared her insights on leadership, discussing the challenges and rewards of leading a specialised manufacturing company in a rapidly changing world.

The Future of Manufacturing

Jane Smith’s journey from civil servant to manufacturing leader is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most rewarding careers are the ones we never planned for. Her story inspires others, proving that success is possible in even the most unexpected places with the right mindset and a commitment to learning.

In June 2020, she shared her insights on leadership and its impact on her career in a podcast with the Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. You can listen to Jane’s podcast interview here: Podcast Link.
